The goal is to have less instructional time lost due to behavior issues.  More focus on the instruction on the part of the students.

The purpose of this grant is to purchase 10 rocking chairs and desks that match them for our 8th grade mathematics classroom.

The rocking motion has been used for centuries to calm someone that is upset or fussy. Many of us think of rocking and equate it with babies. We have more and more students in our care, that are dealing with stresses in their lives that we cannot even imagine. We currently have ten sets of rocking chairs and desks in our classroom. These chairs are in high demand. The students tell me that they like the soothing rocking motion and the fact that they are in charge of how quickly or slowly they rock. On page 41 of the Fremont Public Schools Instructional Playbook there is an entire section devoted to discussing the positive research of movement and learning.

I currently have 107 students that can use these chairs on a daily basis but students for years to come will be able to continue to use them.

Since the arrival and use of these rocking chairs, the referral rate to the office has dropped drastically. The students have found a way through rocking to let out that extra energy without interfering with the learning of their classmates or themselves. Work completion and the quality of the work has also gone up significantly.

With the addition of ten more rocking chairs, we will still have ten regular desks and chairs in the classroom for those students who are not comfortable rocking.

Through our PBIS training we are constantly being told to make the environment positive and give the students the tools necessary to be successful. I feel that the rocking chairs are just one more tool to achieve this goal.
