Julia Cook (social/emotional) books – Karie Martin, Ed.S., School Psychologist, Milliken Park Elementary

By allowing teachers to have their own set of Julia Cook books (for each grade level), the teachers can more easily access these books immediately to read and support social/emotional topics that arise. Guidance lessons on various topics are only able to be taught once/month. Furthermore, every month, a different topic is addressed. If teachers have a set of Julia Cook books at each grade level, the books can be read over an extended amount of time, reviewed over and over again, and activities can be built with these social/emotional discussions within other core curricular areas. By having more social/emotional skill development, students may develop greater respectful and responsible behaviors that help all students learn more effectively throughout the school day.

At this time, I am requesting financial support of $380 to complete a set of 10 Julie Cook books for each grade level team at Milliken Park Elementary. Julia Cook books typically run for approximately $10-$11/book. The grant is to request a set of 10 books for each grade level to have in their shared library of resources (grades K-4). The teachers would select which 10 books that they would like to have as a starter set based upon developmental levels and social/emotional topics of concern.
