Making a Difference Request for $315 Funding

(Partial Funding of $300 of the $615 requested provided by a Creative Teaching Grant from the Foundation)

  • Nebraska Writer’s Collective Poetry Workshop
  • Jana Estaniqui  7th grade English Fremont Middle School

The goals of this plan are to have students:

  1. Listen to poetry pieces being performed.
  2. Analyze expression and movement when poems are performed aloud by the Nebraska Writer’s Collective poets.
  3. Work with poets from Nebraska Writer’s Collective to write poetry pieces of their own (at least four pieces).
  4. Use what they learned about poetry and performance to present and recite their own poetry in front of their peers.

We would like to use the grant to pay for costs associated with the Nebraska Writers Collective.  This program brings 4-6 poets to our school for a day long workshop.  They start the day off by performing some of their original poetry, and getting the students engaged in what they do.  Next, the students spend the rest of the day in mini-sessions with each poet. In the mini sessions the students work on writing different types of poetry while examining different elements of poetry as well as figurative language.  At the end of the day, students get the chance to perform a piece of original poetry in front of their team.

We have done this event on 7A the past five years and it has been a complete success. Kids have really shined in their writing and performances of poetry. This day definitely challenges many students, not only through expressive writing, but also through their performances. Students develop character when they make the decision to take a chance and perform in front of their peers. In the past, many students decide to share their poetry at the encouragement of their teachers, the Nebraska Writer’s Collective poets, and their friends.  In past surveys given to students, they have said how much they enjoyed working with outside poets and thought the experience was very memorable.
